Trap Shooting Teams

A few years ago Trap Shooting was introduced to our high school students interested in this sport. Offered through the Arkansas Game & Fish commission, Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program (AYSSP), Trap Shooting is fast becoming the most participated sport in the state of Arkansas! The sport became so popular at ACA that we now have both a junior team (grades 7– 8) and a senior team (grades 9 – 12).

AYSSP’s website makes this comment:

The Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program (AYSSP) aims to bring the joy of the outdoors and the rewards of safely learning to shoot to young Arkansans. Have you ever considered competing in the Olympics or a national shooting championship? This program from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission could be a start. Both young ladies and young men can compete, and there is a regional competition in May for all of the teams held in Lonoke, Arkansas, followed by a state competition for the top 16 qualified teams.

The students learn gun safety, and take a hunter education course that when passed, enables them to hunt anywhere in the state of Arkansas. While practicing and competing, the students and coaches must wear protective eye and ear protection. Shotguns with 12 or 20 gauge bores are used in Trap. Training exercises both indoors and outside help the students with their proficiency in shooting. The coaches had to go through coaches training and testing to become certified to coach this sport.
